Otoplasty (Ear Pinning Surgery)

Whether disproportionate or deformed ears were present at birth or developed as you/your child grew older, a lack of balance in the ears can impact facial harmony and confidence. Also known as ear pinning surgery, otoplasty — or ear correction surgery — can repair a myriad of ear deformities and/or restore a more proportional and balanced appearance.

If you or your child have an ear deformity or struggle with protruding ears, Dr. Garlick is committed to developing a treatment plan tailored to reclaim a more harmonious, balanced, and natural-looking ear shape. How Can Otoplasty Improve My Concerns?

Otoplasty is often utilized to correct large or projected ears, which is usually characterized by the ears protruding farther from the side of the head than what is considered a normal projection. As a result, the ears may stick out and be a source of insecurity for both children and adults. In general, otoplasty can modify the shape, size, contours, and symmetry of the ears to balance facial harmony and treat conditions such as:

  • Overly large ears: A condition called macrotia
  • Protruding ears: Occurring on one or both sides in varying degrees — not associated with hearing loss
  • Ear deformities: Folded or misshapen ears

Ear correction surgery offers the benefits of a relatively straightforward procedure with minimal downtime. For children affected by disproportionate ears, otoplasty can help reduce bullying, self-consciousness, and depression caused by a large or irregular ear shape. Dr. Garlick has comprehensive experience treating the ears, giving Utah patients the confidence of knowing they’re under the care of a doctor who is board-certified in aesthetic surgery.

How is the Otoplasty Procedure Performed?

During your first consultation, Dr. Garlick will guide you through each step of the process, assess your medical needs, and answer any of your questions. We will also take photos and discuss your concerns. If you have an issue with protruding ears, typically Dr. Garlick will reshape the cartilage with sutures to pin back the ears. He may also reduce the size of the ear by removing cartilage, if necessary. Dr. Garlick will shape your ear during surgery to help achieve the proper positioning. Incisions for otoplasty are generally hidden near the back surface of the ear.

What Can I Expect From the Otoplasty Recovery Period?

This type of surgery offers near-immediate results. Bruising and swelling after otoplasty are to be expected and should subside naturally, although over-the-counter medications may help speed up the healing process. Most patients are able to return to work within a few days depending on the nature of their jobs, and you will receive extensive aftercare instructions in person. When the ears begin to heal properly, Dr. Garlick will remove the sutures. The ears will be permanently positioned, and most surgical scars will be well-hidden behind the ear. Dr. Garlick will monitor your new ears to ensure they heal without issue.

How Much Does Otoplasty Cost?

The cost of otoplasty often depends on factors like insurance, hospital and anesthesia fees, and the extent of surgical work necessary to achieve your goals. The experience of your surgeon, their specialties, and their training can also factor into an otoplasty cost estimate. After your needs are assessed in a consultation, you will receive a personalized quote from our office. Dr. Garlick accepts plastic surgery financing plans from qualified patients through PatientFi® and Mountain America Credit Union. These two options can each help individuals pay for their procedure in more manageable installments, making otoplasty more affordable.

Dr. Garlick can evaluate the ears to improve shape, positioning, and proportion. If you or your child experience a lack of confidence due to a disproportionate ear shape, don’t hesitate to contact our Utah office for more information or to schedule your appointment.
