Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery is among the premier facial plastic surgery procedures to brighten and renew the upper face. As reduced collagen production and the natural aging process begin to affect the delicate eyelid area, many patients struggle with puffiness, excess skin, laxity, wrinkles, and “hooding.” Not only can these concerns make you look older and more tired than you may feel, but signs of aging like loose, excess skin in the upper lids also tend to droop into your field of vision. With blepharoplasty, also known as cosmetic eyelid surgery, you can reclaim a more youthful, energetic, and lively appearance that more closely aligns to how you feel.

Dr. Garlick, a board-certified and fellowship-trained plastic surgeon in Utah, has extensive experience smoothing the eyelid contours and restoring a brighter look according to your goals. Don’t hesitate to reach out to our Salt Lake City-area practice to discuss whether eyelid surgery is the best solution to address your concerns.

How Can Blepharoplasty Improve My Appearance?

While the benefits achieved are unique to each patient, eyelid surgery can generally make you look more rested and refreshed. In addition to reducing an aged, fatigued, or stressed appearance, blepharoplasty can:

  • Treat sagging skin disturbing the contour of the eyelids, or impairing your field of sight
  • Smoothing folds in the upper and lower eyelids caused by excess skin
  • Reposition or remove fat deposits causing puffiness or under-eye bags
  • Soften fine lines and wrinkles caused by loose skin
  • Address drooping lower eyelids revealing the white area below the iris

The results of eyelid surgery can be powerful, reducing signs of aging without sacrificing the natural character of your face. The procedure also has the benefit of utilizing internal or undetectable incisions, which minimizes post-operative scarring and leaves little to no evidence of surgery.

How is the Blepharoplasty Procedure Performed?

Both upper and lower eyelid surgery are outpatient procedures performed under general anesthesia. During upper blepharoplasty, the incision is typically made along the crease of the upper eyelid, allowing any scarring to blend into the natural eyelid contours. Lower blepharoplasty uses an incision placed internally or along the lower lash line depending on the specifics of your procedure. Dr. Garlick will go over every detail of your procedure with you once your treatment plan is finalized. The surgery generally takes one to two hours to perform.

What Can I Expect From the Eyelid Surgery Recovery Period?

As an outpatient procedure, blepharoplasty patients are usually able to return home on the same day as their surgery with the help of a friend or loved one. While most men and women are able to perform light activities within a couple days, it often takes 7 to 10 days to return to non-strenuous work. Swelling, tenderness, tightness, and potential bruising are common during recovery and over-the-counter medications can help alleviate any discomfort. Temporary blurriness, light sensitivity, and other changes in vision may also occur immediately after surgery and Dr. Garlick will fully inform you of what you can expect during the healing process.

How Much Does Blepharoplasty Cost?

The total cost of eyelid surgery is encompassed by many different factors, including fees for the anesthesia, surgeon, hospital facility, and lab tests, among other standard surgical expenses. Your cost estimate will also be informed by details specific to your treatment plan, including:

  • The extent of your concerns
  • Whether you’re treating the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both areas
  • The technique(s) necessary to give you your desired results

Once you meet with Dr. Garlick during a consultation, our office will be able to provide you with a personalized quote. If you’re seeking a more economical option to undergo blepharoplasty, we encourage you to inquire about plastic surgery financing. Through programs provided by Mountain America Credit Union and PatientFi®, the costs of eyelid surgery can be more affordable for qualified patients.

Whether performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both regions, blepharoplasty can give patients a more energetic and lively appearance without sacrificing a natural look.
